Seacliff Celebrates Ownership of Park Site
Community members from Seacliff Needs A Park and the Seacliff Improvement Association joined county officials in marking the purchase of 1.25 acres for a new park.
By Linda Fridy
After 10 years, a so-close bond defeat and plenty of compromise, Seacliff community leaders celebrated Santa Cruz County’s purchase of 1.25 acres for a future park.

“You folks know even better than I do how long a process this had been,” county supervisor Ellen Pirie said at the Dec. 1 gathering.

About two dozen neighbors and county staff attended, many of whom worked for years through Seacliff Needs A Park (SNAP) and the Seacliff Improvement Association to oppose development on the parcel and create improved open space.

Pirie, joined by SNAP chair Tom Dobrovolny, parks commissioner Kate Minott, Seacliff’s Harry Vaugh, Pepper Golish and many others, planted a “Future Park Site” sign to mark the official ownership of the land.

The site, at the intersection of McGregor and Sea Ridge, resulted from Pirie negotiating an agreement with South county Housing to build affordable condos on part of the land and sell the County the other part for $465,000.

Previous development plans had included a retail site and a hotel. The group met Dec. 6 to talk about park features and fundraising options to purchase them.
